The 6 Revenue Streams Every Song Can Generate

1

Performance Royalties

Paid every time the song is played — radio, streaming, live performance, TV, restaurants. Collected by your PRO (ASCAP/BMI/SESAC). This is passive income that never stops as long as people keep playing your music. Register EVERY song with your PRO immediately upon creation.

2

Mechanical Royalties

Paid every time the song is reproduced — physical sales (CDs, vinyl) and digital downloads. In the streaming era, mechanicals are also paid per stream. Collected via your distributor or a mechanical licensing agency like DistroKid or CD Baby.

3

Sync Licensing Fees

One-time (sometimes recurring) payment for use in TV, film, advertising, games. The highest per-placement revenue in music. No ceiling — a hit sync deal can pay six figures for a single placement. Build relationships with music supervisors.

4

Master Royalties

Paid to the owner of the master recording (the actual audio file) for streaming and sales. If you own your masters, you earn both the master royalty AND the publishing royalty on every stream. OWN YOUR MASTERS — this is non-negotiable.

5

Print / Sheet Music

If your composition gets licensed for sheet music, guitar tabs, or other printed formats. Small stream but completely passive once set up. Register with the Harry Fox Agency or directly through your PRO.

6

Neighboring Rights

International performance royalties collected when your music is played outside the US. Often overlooked — significant money for producers with international reach. Register with SoundExchange for digital performance rights.

Understanding PROs — Your Collection Agency

🇺🇸 US PRO Options

  • ASCAP — oldest, strong in pop, hip-hop, film. Free to join.
  • BMI — largest catalog, strong in country and hip-hop. Free to join.
  • SESAC — invitation-only, known for gospel and jazz.
  • Register your catalog with ONE PRO — you cannot be a member of two simultaneously.

📋 What to Register

  • Every song title you own, even if unreleased
  • Every sample clearance you've completed
  • Every co-writer and their percentage split
  • Publisher name (your LLC should be your publisher)
  • Register immediately upon creation — not after release

Self's Pro Tip

The biggest mistake artists and producers make is NOT registering their songs with a PRO. I've seen producers leave tens of thousands of dollars in uncollected royalties because they didn't register. ASCAP and BMI are both free to join. Register today. Register everything. The money is already there waiting for you — you just have to claim it.

Module Exercise

Take these steps today: (1) Join ASCAP or BMI (free at ascap.com or bmi.com), (2) Register your 5 most recent songs in their database, (3) Create a spreadsheet listing all your songs, their registration status, and any revenue they've generated. This spreadsheet is the beginning of your music business management system. Update it after every release.
