You Are Not Just a Beat Maker — You Are a Business

Let me be real with you from lesson one. When I started out in Queens, NY, I was just making beats in my bedroom like everybody else. I had the talent — but I didn't have the mindset. And that's the difference between the producers who go platinum and the ones who stay stuck.

Here's the truth nobody tells you: The beat is only 20% of this business. The other 80%? That's your mindset, your brand, your relationships, and your business decisions. I've worked with DMX, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Juelz Santana — and every single one of those placements happened because of HOW I THOUGHT, not just what I made.

"The producers who stay broke make beats. The producers who go platinum build empires. I built ELPD Productions from nothing — one mindset shift at a time."

— Super Producer Self

The Three-Level Producer Mindset

Level 1

Hobbyist

Makes beats for fun. Waits to be discovered. Thinks talent is enough.

Result: Never breaks through
Level 2

Hustler

Sells beats online. Has some clients. Grinds hard but no system.

Result: Inconsistent income
Level 3

Executive Producer

Thinks like a CEO. Builds systems. Creates lasting value and relationships.

Result: Platinum. Legacy. Empire.

Right now, I need you to make a decision. Which level are you operating at — and which level do you COMMIT to operating at from today forward? Because everything in this blueprint is built for Level 3 thinking.

Eliminating the Starving Artist Mentality

The biggest thing holding most producers back isn't their skills — it's the story they tell themselves about money. I call it the Starving Artist Mentality, and it is the #1 killer of music careers.

Signs you have it:

  • You give away beats for free "to build a relationship"
  • You feel guilty charging what your work is worth
  • You accept low offers because you're afraid of losing the deal
  • You think asking for money upfront is "bad for business"
  • You believe you have to "prove yourself" before charging real money

I had ALL of those early in my career. I gave beats away. I took bad deals. I let artists use my work and get paid while I got nothing. And I'm telling you — that ends today.

Self's Pro Tip

Your value is set by YOU, not the artist. DMX didn't make my beats valuable — my beats made DMX's album better. Never forget that. You bring value to THEIR project. Charge accordingly.

The Platinum Mindset Shift

"I hope they like it"
"This is fire. Here's my rate."
"I'll work for exposure"
"Exposure doesn't pay bills. Cash does."
"I'll lower my price this time"
"My price is my price. Next."
"I need their co-sign"
"I AM the co-sign."

Building Your Identity as a Producer

When someone says "Super Producer Self" — they know exactly what that means. Grammy nominated. Platinum records. ELPD Productions. Queens, NY. That's a brand. That's an identity. And it didn't happen by accident.

Your producer identity is made up of four things:

Your Sound

What makes YOUR beats instantly recognizable? Dark and cinematic? Hard trap? Soulful R&B? You must own a lane.

Your Brand Name

Your producer name is your trademark. Make it memorable, make it professional, make it yours forever.

Your Reputation

In this industry, your word is everything. Be on time. Deliver what you promise. Never burn bridges.

Your Legacy Vision

What do you want to be known for in 20 years? That vision drives every decision you make today.

"I didn't just build a career. I built ELPD Productions — a full company with artists, films, a TV network, and courses. That's what happens when you think bigger than just the beat."

The Daily Habits of Platinum Producers

Success in music production is not a moment — it's a daily practice. Here are the non-negotiable habits I've maintained throughout a 30-year career at the highest level:

01

Make Something Every Day

Even if it's bad. Even if you never use it. The muscle must be exercised daily. I made beats on days I didn't feel like it — and some of those became platinum records.

02

Study the Business, Not Just the Music

Read contracts. Understand publishing. Know what a 360 deal is. Know what sync licensing pays. Know your worth in every room you walk into.

03

Network With Purpose

Every conversation is a potential collaboration, placement, or deal. I got my first major placement because I was in the RIGHT room. Put yourself in rooms where deals happen.

04

Protect Your Catalog

Register every beat. Copyright every track. Get ISRC codes. Never let your work exist without protection. Your catalog is your retirement plan.

05

Invest Back Into Your Craft

Buy better equipment. Take courses. Hire mixing engineers. The producers who stay broke spend every dollar they make. The ones who go platinum reinvest.

Module 1 Exercise: The Producer Identity Statement

Before you move to Module 2, complete this exercise. Write your Producer Identity Statement — a clear, powerful 3-sentence description of who you are as a producer.

Template:

I am [Your Producer Name], a [your genre/style] producer from [your city]. My sound is [describe your sound in 3–5 words], and I specialize in creating music for [your target artist/client]. My goal is to [your 5-year vision].

Self's Example:

"I am Super Producer Self, a platinum-level hip-hop and R&B executive producer from Queens, NY. My sound is hard-hitting, emotionally charged, and radio-ready, and I specialize in creating records for top-tier artists and independent artists ready to go to the next level. My goal is to build ELPD Productions into the most respected independent music and entertainment company in the United States."

Save your statement. You'll use it throughout this course to refine your brand and business.
